DECAFFEINATION: The process and affect.

“Decaffeinated” does not mean 100% caffeine-free. According to the USDA, decaf coffee must be 97% caffeine-free. That means an average 12 oz. cup of decaffeinated coffee, which initially might have been packed with 180 mg of caffeine, would only contain 5.4 mg of caffeine.

The most common decaffeination methods involve chemical solvents, usually ethyl acetate or methylene chloride. In the direct method, the coffee beans are steamed and then rinsed repeatedly with the chemical solvent to flush away the caffeine.

The Swiss Water Process is a patented decaffeination method that uses only water to remove 99.9% of a coffee's caffeine content. Heat and time are also employed, but clean water is the only added ingredient.

ORIGINS: Coffee growing regions

Coffee is primarily found in the "bean Belt, " the world's area that borders the equator from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. ROASTING: How should I consider roasting when choosing my coffee?

There are entire books dedicated to the art of roasting coffee. For this post, we will cover the basics to help you choose your specialty coffees. Generally speaking, roasting coffee affects three aspects of how coffee tastes—acidity, sweetness, and Bitterness. The longer a coffee is roasted, the less acidity it will have. however, bitterness will slowly increase with longer and darker roasted coffees. As far as sweetness goes, every coffee is different, and finding the perfect balance in between the curves of acidity and bitterness is essential.

  • Lighter roasted coffee has more caffeine and tends to be more acidic yet preserves more natural flavors of the growing region.
  • Darker roasted coffees have less caffeine and tend to be less acidic, and more of the natural flavors of the growing region are cooked out of the bean.

STORAGE: How should I store my coffee?

Coffee is best preserved by storing it in a cool, dry place. Do not put your coffee in your refrigerator, as that environment has more humidity. Keep your coffee in your kitchen cabinet or pantry in an airtight container.

TEXTURE: What size coffee grind should I be using?

Discussing the appropriate size of coffee grind ance be challenging as there are differences between each manufacturer's grind settings. It's best to experiment to get the best texture for your taste and extraction method. That said, here are some basic guidelines:

  • COARSE: Good for French Press extraction method
  • MEDIUM: Good for automatic and drip coffee makers
  • FINE: Good for pour-over, Aeropress, and stove-top MOKA pot extraction methods
  • EXTRA FINE: Good for Espresso extraction

TEMPERATURE: What is the best temperature for brewing coffee?

The target temperature for extracting the most pleasant flavors from coffee is just off the boil between 205 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit.

WATER: Quality Matters

Bad-tasting water makes for bad-tasting coffee. Also, do not use distilled water when brewing coffee. You need mineral content to extract the good stuff from your coffee correctly, and the absence of minerals can lead to very sharp and bitter tastes.

How can I make changes to my coffee subscription?

After logging into your profile, you can manage your coffee subscription by selecting the "edit subscription" link at the top. You can follow the directions as outlined here.

Your passion for coffee, guitar, and “playing it forward” is our driving motive.  We understand that there are times when we may not have met your expectations, even though we do our very best. We are sorry you’re not fully satisfied. We are happy to refund you for your coffee purchase, and you may keep or donate the coffee.

How do I apply discount codes?

We routinely offer special promotions. To take advantage of this, it is required that you enter the code in the area on the right-hand side of the checkout page in the box that reads "discount or promotional code." After you enter the code, remember to click the "apply" button to the system can calculate the discount.

Can I add special instructions?

On your cart page, there is an area for you to leave us comments, notes, or special instructions. Or you can delight us with a pleasant wish or your favorite investment secret. : )

Do I need to answer all the questions on the account creation page?

An account is required to purchase coffee so we can track your reward points accurately. However, you do not need to answer all the questions. At the top of the page, we state that "all of the following fields are optional.  As always, your data is yours and will never be shared.  We simply gather this information as a way to get to know you better and to delight you on special occasions."

Why do I need to select a cause?

Giving back, or "playing it forward," is fundamental to our mission. As such, we use this info to share our profits with our collection of charity partners appropriately. So you can be assured that you are helping us do great things with every delicious cup of coffee you enjoy.

How do I earn Acoustic Rewards?

You will earn 1X, 2X or 3X rewards with every dollar spent on coffee. The quickest way to build your rewards is with our coffee subscriptions.

  • One-time purchases earn 1X rewards
  • Pay-As-You-Go subscriptions earn 2X rewards
  • Pre-Paid subscriptions earn 3X rewards

How do I redeem my rewards?

At the bottom right of our website is our rewards widget.

  1. Open the rewards widget by clicking on it once.
  2. If you do not currently have an account with us, or if you are not logged into your account, you will be prompted to create one and/or sign in.
  3. Navigate to "ways to redeem."
  4. At the top of the widget, you will see the number of rewards in your account. All products for which you have enough points will have a "redeem" button you can select.
  5. View the list of free products
  6. Select the category you are interested in.
  7. Redeem the product.

As a small company with limited resources, we have decided not to publish a phone number as it mostly results in solicitation calls that disrupt our focus of ensuring your coffee is roasted to perfection and shipped fresh to you.
